Biography
In the mid-1990s, I directed my first films. In 1998, I produced my first — and I haven't stopped since.
I have directed and produced documentary films for German and European broadcasters — among them WDR, ZDF, ARTE and 3sat — always in close collaboration with editors, sound designers, composers and other specialists.
My work has taken me across much of the globe: to the fjords of Norway, the reefs of the Caribbean, the Red Sea, and far out into the open Pacific — to lakes, rainforests and deserts on several continents.
In 2006, I added a second skill to my toolkit: I got certified as a SCUBA diver and learned to operate the full range of modern production equipment — on land, at sea and in the air. Since then, I have realised many of my projects not only as director and producer, but also as cameraman. Marine life — dolphins, whales, manatees, sharks, reef ecosystems — has become one of the defining themes of my work.
What drives me is the encounter: with places that are rarely seen, with scientists who dedicate their lives to understanding them, and with animals that behave in ways no screenwriter could have invented. My films try to bring those encounters to audiences who will never make the dive themselves.
I remain grateful that, after long journeys, my wife and two children still recognise the man who returns home.
